Code Vein is an action RPG with an anime-like set of visuals that really help you immerse into the story and the characters. The game is a story-driven connected dungeon experience where you can play alone or with a friend as you try to eliminate enemies and eventually defend one another from attacks or powerful enemies.
At its core, Code Vein is all about conveying a sense of challenge and also bringing you numerous enemies to beat and tackle all the time. Dealing with enemies is not easy at first, but it shows the Dark Souls inspiration and just how demanding the game can really be. The gameplay itself is challenging, just like its inspiration, and the game is not shy from putting you face to face with some demanding enemies.
The fact that all those enemies are actually integrated into the story some way is very interesting. The story is not overly impressive, it has some tropes here and there, but it stands on its own as a great way to convey some really intense ways to battle and adapt to the process. It’s definitely seen better adaptations, but that doesn’t really say it’s bad. That being said, the gameplay is phenomenal and that’s what we like the most in this game. You have a plethora of weapons here, namely axes, spears, bayonets and many others.
Using all of these and constantly trying to adjust and adapt to the process is what will really push things to that next level in a very professional manner. You have character abilities too and you can enhance those with the help of Blood Code enhancements. All the little details and ideas matter here, and you will find the gameplay to be as comprehensive and as rewarding as it can be without that much of a hassle. It will take a little while to get used to the enemy attacks, as each one of them is different.
The good thing about this is that you do have all kinds of customization options. A lot of people will like the fact that there are lots of different ways to keep your character unique, and that’s what really makes the gameplay so immersive and fun at the same time. Granted, it will take a little bit to get used to some changes, but it’s totally worth it and different, exactly as it should feel and be.
We like the fact that you can change the character class at any given time and you can easily mix and match skills to make them your own. If you want you can partner with NPCs, and that can really make the difference as you try to immerse yourself into the process and just enjoy it.
All in all, Code Vein, by Bandai Namco, is a stellar game with some nifty ideas in it and some great gameplay. It takes a bit to get used to the anime style if you are not into that, but the gameplay is staggering, the battles are great and being able to strategize and play with a friend is the cherry on top here!
