The easiest way to market your indie game? Start today. Right now. Actually, finish this article first. Then start!
It’s never too early to start marketing your indie game. In fact, the sooner you start, the less intimidating it will be, and the more effective it will become. And the more natural it will feel as you and your game improve. Don’t get me wrong, marketing is hard work. And the harder you work at it, the more successful you will be. But if you pace yourself and start early, you can lay much of the groundwork long before crunch time leading up to your game’s release. The easiest way to market your indie game is to get started right away.
Oh! You aren’t a “marketing person?”
I feel you; I used to not be a Dog Person, either. But you know what happened? I got a dog.
Hear me out, okay? It’s exactly the same thing! But instead of an awesome, well-vetted indie game, my goal was an awesome, well-vetted (pun!) dog.

At first, the relationship is weird. It’s like, I don’t understand what you want. I’ve got important things to do, I can’t be constantly creating a website or letting you out to pee. I can’t stop what I’m doing in order to post a gameplay gif with the #ScreenshotSaturday hashtag or clean up your floor-poop. Seriously, I’m busy!
With dogs or marketing, it would be a nice luxury to have someone do this stuff for you. And I’m sure you can find someone on IndieWatch, by the way. But if you do it yourself, you take away lessons and experiences you would otherwise miss out on. Plus, you have a dog-game hybrid that has been raised and nurtured to your own specifications.
Over time, your project starts to take off on its own, requiring fewer and fewer potty breaks and clean-up time. You can take your social media accounts for a brisk walk every now and then, without having to struggle with getting the leash on. Your audience will look forward to your posts and gather around to watch your dog pee on a tree.
Okay, I’ll stop with the dog metaphor. I’m getting confused.
You and marketing may have an awkward relationship at first. You’re bound to make mistakes. So make those mistakes now, while your audience is small! You’ll learn what works and when something works, your audience will grow. By the time you have a big, fat, hungry audience, your project will be ready to drop and your marketing skills will be honed to a fine point.
Yeah, but how to get started?
There’s a reason marketing can be so intimidating. There is so much to learn! But like I said, the easiest way to market your indie game is to get started now! You’ll be an expert by the time it really matters. Subscribe to IndieWatch if you haven’t and pay attention to the lessons we share! Before you know it, you’ll be a total dog person. Just like meeeee!
