Dyscourse: multiple endings in a adventure point-and-click game

Dyscourse is an adventure survival game set on an island where a group of a plane crash survivors are struggling to deal with the harshness of nature and the conflicting range of their personalities. It was released in 2015 after a successful Kickstarter campaign and its developers at Owlchemy Labs delivered an interesting game.

There is a relatively basic plot to Dyscourse. The player controls Rita who has just woken up on the desert island after the plane crash and must work with the group to survive. Rita is quickly introduced to the other survivors and the player must make meaningful choices that drastically change the direction of the story.

Making choices is a key gameplay aspect and directly affects the game ending. There is a wide number of different possible endings which range from a few or many characters dieing depending on you choices and it’s not always possible to escape from the island. This is a great thing to have in a game and the addition of a “Day Rewind” feature is perfect for this type of game. Players don’t need to replay the game from the start, instead, they can just select which day they wish to replay from. This is ideal for investigating different areas on the island, saving other characters or for discovering new endings.

Every choice matters in Dyscourse and affects the relationships of the various characters. The player takes leadership of the group and has the final say in everything, including what the group decides to do as they attempt to escape from the island later in the game. Relationships between the characters can also be influenced and  effected by the players actions towards them.

While there are plenty of interesting and moral choices for players to make in Dyscourse, most of the gameplay is centered around being a point-and-click adventure game. During most of the game, the player will be exploring different areas in search for items that can help the group survive and also for clues that reveal why the plane crashed. Exploring the different areas and collecting items can also change the direction of the story and give the player a very different end screen.

The game features a nice end screen that displays the total results of that playthrough. It allows the player to see when a character died, what happened to the survivors and also see some other interesting pieces of information. While this isn’t a necessity, it’s great to see that Owlchemy Labs decided to include this in a choice-based game.

Each playthrough is relatively short, it takes around one hour to complete the game which makes it perfect for people with time restraints. The real value in Dyscourse comes from replaying the game, however, there are many potential options and choices to explore which are guided by the Steam achievements for the game. Completing all of the achievements takes around eight hours but there is still more to explore with a variety of potential endings.

Owlchemy Labs has certainly been able to create an interesting game with Dyscourse. There is a lot for players to explore in this choice-based game which can keep players coming back for quite some time. While this is a relatively short game, it’s difficult for two playthroughs to be exactly the same without purposely doing this. There’s not a lot of action in it which does mean that the point-and-click gameplay can become a little repetitive later in the game but its short length works well to remove this issue.

Dyscourse is a game that fans of choice-based games will enjoy playing. It takes on the popular survival game genre and adds a twist to it, which both directs the story and provides players with plenty of exploration opportunities.
